What Are Texas Vehicle Inspection Requirements?
If a car is registered in your name in Texas, the law currently requires you to get an annual inspection of your vehicle. The purpose of the law is to make sure vehicles in this state are roadworthy and in safe operating condition.
You can get your vehicle inspected within 90 days of the expiration of your vehicle’s registration. Some of the items Texas law requires to be examined include, but aren’t limited to, the following:
- Wheel assembly
- Steering systems
- Seat belts
- Horns and warning devices
If the vehicle doesn’t pass the inspection, the owner has 15 days to rectify the issue. In addition, until it passes inspection, the owner won’t be able to renew the registration.
Recently, Texas enacted a new law that will eliminate the annual inspection for most vehicles. However, that law will not take effect until 2025. Until then, inspection requirements must be met.
Vehicles that don’t pass inspections can pose a serious danger on Laredo, Texas, roads and highways. If you were injured in a car accident because of a defective vehicle, reach out to Roderick C. Lopez Personal Injury Lawyers to find out what your legal rights are and how we can help you assert them.
What if I’m Injured in a Car Accident Involving a Car With an Expired Vehicle Inspection?
Texas is an “at-fault” car accident state, which means you must prove the other driver’s negligence caused the accident. Being involved in a car crash where the other vehicle didn’t pass inspection due to some defect doesn’t necessarily mean that defect was the cause of the accident.
Take, for example, an owner’s car that failed an inspection because the steering system was not operating properly. If the owner continued driving the car knowing of the defect and later caused an accident because they lost control of the steering, they may be liable for the injuries caused in the crash.
You don’t need to go through the claims process on your own. Call Roderick C. Lopez today so we can get to work reviewing your accident and evaluating your claim.
